Building Corporate Character

With a revitalized focus on social responsibility worldwide, many organizations have taken heed and dedicated more efforts toward identifying their guiding principles and ethics. While these efforts are a step in the right direction, true ethical excellence and the building of corporate character must transcend rigid rules of conduct.

This Thursday, we’ll be welcoming Julian Baggini for a CXR Lecture. Julian will explain why one of the most effective ways for organizations to make their values come to life is to focus instead on their culture, or what Julian calls; corporate character. Corporate character encompasses the values, ethics, and behaviors that define an organization's identity. In this blog, we’ll highlight some of Julian’s ideas and concepts.

The first step:

Good ethics requires careful judgment based on specific circumstances. Organizations must analyze the consequences of their behavior at every level, considering the impact on employees, the community, society, and the environment. Ethical organizations seize opportunities to improve outcomes and mitigate negative effects, demonstrating a commitment to flourishing for all.

Beyond rules:

True goodness lies in individual character, not just adherence to rules. Ethical decisions should stem from personal integrity and an understanding of what is morally right. Consultation of policies should be secondary to internalizing ethical principles.

Ethical training is an ongoing process that develops practical wisdom. By integrating ethical considerations into daily decision-making, individuals strengthen their capacity to make autonomous, principled choices. Ethical training empowers employees, fostering a culture of responsibility and accountability.

Good ethics at each level:

Virtuous actions distinguish an organization's ethical character. Leaders must live the organization's values, inspiring others to follow suit. Ethical behavior must become the norm, cultivating trust and integrity throughout the organization.

Beyond profit:

A good organization transcends profit-seeking by nurturing a sense of purpose. When people are inspired to work together and are proud of collective achievements, it signifies a strong corporate character. Values must be lived, and pursuits should align with societal and environmental well-being.
